September 15, 2025That thought lingered after meeting with Professor and Chief Physician Karen Andersen-Ranberg from the Geriatric Research Unit (GFE), Odense University Hospital (OUH), and the Department of Geriatrics, OUH.
Karen described a visit to an elderly resident at a nursing home: recently discharged, now suddenly confused, withdrawn, and unstable.
A classic clinical dilemma—how do you establish the correct diagnosis in the patient’s own home when symptoms are nonspecific and no rapid, targeted tests exist to support the diagnostic process?
Imagine if she had had access to our point-of-care test. Within 30 minutes—right there in the patient’s home—she could have received support in confirming or ruling out whether a treatable urinary tract infection was the cause of the altered behavior.
