It sounds almost unbelievable – especially at a time when we are struggling to limit the overuse of antibiotics. But unfortunately, it is the reality – and it is often the most vulnerable patients who are overtreated.
UTI is the diagnosis most often suspected when elderly patients, catheter users, or frail individuals suddenly become confused, tired, develop a fever, or start behaving differently.
To act quickly, doctors usually rely on the diagnostic tools available today: urine dipsticks and microscopy.
But the problem is that while these tests work well for diagnosing younger, healthy individuals with classic symptoms such as burning and frequent urination—where bacterial growth and an activated immune system often equal a UTI—there is a very high risk of false positives when used for vulnerable patients.
👉 Vulnerable individuals often have bacteria in their urine without it meaning they have an infection that requires treatment.
👉 The immune system can be active without it being due to an acute infection.
